If you have ever struggled with having dandruff on your heard, you know how embarrassing it can be. The dry skin on the scalp begins to shed and you’re left with an unsightly powdering of dead skin cells all over your upper back and shoulders. It can be quite embarrassing. If you have a beard and you begin to look down at your chest, only to notice those forbidden flakes across your shirt, there might be a reason this is happening.
If you use a beard oil on a daily basis, you might be wondering if this is happening to you because of your daily use.
So, will using beard oil cause dandruff? Most likely, no. The beard oil you’re using will not typically cause dandruff. However, if your beard oil contains harsh ingredients such as any alcohol, it will dry out the skin beneath your beard which will cause beard dandruff.
So, if you’re using beard oil on a daily basis, you might think you’re good to go. Well, not entirely. If your beard oil isn’t manufactured with skin hydration and health in mind, it might be leading you down a dark path of flakiness on your shirt.

How Do You Avoid Beard Dandruff?
When someone discovers that they have those horrible flakes over their shirt, it can be pretty embarrassing. It’s at that moment when you discover those flakes that you want to just curl up and run away from any social gathering.
Like anything, the best cure is prevention. By taking daily care of your skin and beard, you’ll be proactively preventing any dandruff from forming on your beard. Here are a few steps that you can take in order to make sure that you’re doing all that you can against those pesky flakes.
Eat a Proper Diet
This one is always the hardest to do when you’re trying to get healthier. Finding healthier foods will give you a healthier look. It’s not rocket science. However, science has discovered that there is a link between high carbohydrate foods and skin conditions. So, if you’re looking to diminish that beard dandruff, you’re going to want to eat a proper diet.
Drink More Water
It’s so important to hydrate to keep your skin moisturized. It’s so easy to lather lotion across a certain part of your body and call it a day, but the best way to moisturize your skin is to drink enough water each day. They have been pushing for eight 8oz glasses of water per day, but I try to take down a gallon each and every day. That’s nearly double the recommended intake, and I feel so much better.
Not only does my skin look better, but I have noticed that my skin doesn’t dry out as quickly.
Exfoliate Your Beard
This is something that many people tend to forget to do when taking part in their daily grooming routine. I’ve recommended THIS exfoliator on the blog before, and that’s because it truly is the best one that I’ve come across.
When you exfoliate your beard, you’ll be removing the dandruff (dead skin flakes) that will be falling off later throughout your day. By doing this, you’re stimulating the skin, removing excess dandruff and giving your beard a fighting chance against dandruff.
Stop Scratching Your Beard
If you’ve never had dandruff, you aren’t aware that it can be sort of itchy. However, even if you don’t have dandruff, excessive itching can inflame and irritate your skin, which might actually bring about the onset of beard dandruff.
By using these quick tips, you’ll be off on the right foot to prevent dandruff. But, what if you already noticed that you have beard dandruff? What’s the best way to get rid of it?
How To Get Rid of Beard Dandruff
If you have those awful flakes falling off your cheeks and chin, it’s time to take serious actions against it. Beard dandruff can be so embarrassing — Trust me… I know. But, luckily for us, there are some steps that we can take to fight beard dandruff.
The first step that I’d recommend taking is using an anti-dandruff shampoo, such as Nizoral. You can find that product HERE. The reason you’re going to want to use this dandruff shampoo for your beard is because it will combat the flakiness, bring back the moisture, and heal the dead skin beneath your beard which is causing it to flake.
Many companies try to push a “beard serum” or “anti-dandruff shampoo for beards” specifically. However, Nizoral is a product for your head, not your beard. But… guess what? It doesn’t matter! All of these products use marketing schemes to get you to spend more money. It all has the same ingredients.
Second, I’d recommend finding a beard oil to put on after you shower with the Nizoral. This will keep your beard and skin beneath it hydrated throughout the entire day. My favorite beard oil that doesn’t cause dandruff due to harsh chemicals is Honest Amish Beard Oil. I LOVE this stuff. It seriously helped me cure my dandruff faster when I paired it with my Nizoral.
This beard oil will not cause dandruff. It is chock-full of natural ingredients that will diminish signs of dandruff, keep your beard hairs soft and hydrated, and tame your beard.
By doing this you’re going to get rid of your beard dandruff in no time. All you need is these two products, and you’re going to see a massive difference in about a week.
How Often Should You Shampoo Your Beard?
People often wonder if you should be shampooing your beard at all. If your beard is long enough, you should be shampoo it just as often as you wash your hair, which should be 3-5 times per week. Any more than that, and you’re asking for a dry scalp stripped of all of its natural oils… This is a precursor to dandruff.
However, if you have beard dandruff, and you’re using my top recommendation, Nizoral, you’re going to want to wash your beard every day until you don’t have dandruff anymore. If you’re like me, and you are prone to dandruff, after the dandruff has subsided, I wash my hair and beard once a week with the shampoo.
It’s easy for people to think that washing your beard everyday (with non-dandruff fighting shampoo) is good for you. How could it be bad for you, right? Well, when you’re shampooing, the chemicals in the shampoo actually strip away your hair’s natural oils, which play an essential role in keeping your hair and scalp hydrated. By washing your hair too much, you’re actually going to be more prone to dandruff, which can also happen on your beard.
To finish off, if you’re using a beard oil, you’re not going to get dandruff. However, if you’re using a beard oil with alcohols in it, you’re going to be more prone to dandruff. This is why I recommend using only trusted brands, such as Honest Amish Beard Oil, which will not give you dandruff.
If you have beard dandruff, it’s important to use an anti-dandruff shampoo to fight away those pesky flakes. By keeping up a proper beard grooming routine as mentioned above, you’re going to eliminate beard dandruff all together.
